Hejduk Watch: Week of August 8th, 2010

(Editor's Note: We continue our absurd weekly mission to document the season of Columbus Crew and team captain Frankie Hejduk.

Why, you ask? Well because we want Hejduk to become the National Spokesperson for the Free Beer Movement. His steadfast commitment to American soccer and, of course, beer is above none.

Read our post, "The Case for Frankie Hejduk" and there will be no doubt in our mind that Captain Free Beer is the right man for the job.)

The Crew captain and future Free Beer Movement National Spokesperson returned from suspension to anchor the Columbus back line as the Yellow Man Group visited the Philadelphia Union on Thursday night.

Columbus forward Steven Lenhart was the hero on the night, bagging both of the Crew's goals in a 2-1 over the Union in their shinny, new PPL Park.

Crew beat writer, Shawn Mitchell wrote the Hejduk and Co. performed some "cluch defending" through the evening to preserve the win, but that wasn't before a poorly timed tackle by our man, Frankie, almost undid their strong efforts.

Philly striker Sebastian LeToux went down easily under the slightest of touches by Hejduk earning the home side a penalty kick and Frankie a yellow card in the dying moments of the first half. LeToux converted the spot kick to tie the contest at 1-1. Lenhart bailed out his teammates with a 50th minute strike that held until full time.

From the final replay one can see that our dear hero barely touches LeToux and the Union striker was already making his way to the turf in anticipation of Hejduk's incoming tackle.

Frankie is never wrong. Unfortunately, like many people in America, the referee did not see it from Frankie's perspective.

Our Frankie Rating: Surfboards Out of Surfboards

Despite the yellow card and PK give-away (on a pretty bogus call) our man Frankie performed admirably in his return to the starting 11. The Crew remain in first place due to Hejduk's and his teammates contributions.

United States Soccer National Team Status:
Coach Bob Bradley named his 23-man roster for the international friendly against Brazil this Tuesday and Frankie Hejduk was not among those listed. Even after Chad Marshall pulled out of the squad, Coach Sweatpants didn't see fit to call in his Crew teammate.

It may seem as though Frankie's last USMNT appearance was the dreadful 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Denmark.
