We Love Hope Solo

We've honored U.S. Women's National Team Goalkeeper Hope Solo before. In fact she was one of the very first to be bought an imaginary (but hopefully real someday... like Pinocchio!) beer. Just this weekend the hottie between the posts led her #1 national side to a 4-0 beat down of #2 ranked Germany in Cleveland.

But that's not why we think that Ms. Solo is one of the greatest women to EVER live; kinda like Amelia Earhart, Dolly Madison, Jane Addams, Ida Tarbell, and Cheryl Cole.

Today it is because of her commitment to the FBM cause.

We received an e-mail from a friend in St. Louis who let us know that Hope was fighting the good fight to "spread American soccer one beer at a time".

From Free Beer Movement fan Bradley:

Hey, this happened a couple weeks ago, but I thought it worthy of a Free Beer mention. Hope Solo who plays for both the national team and St. Louis Athletica sent out the following invitation to all the Soccer Supporters Groups in St. Louis both men's and women's:

However, she also bought one of the pre-game tailgate tents and 20 tickets to give out for free to anybody who wanted them. I don't know how many tickets she ended up buying, but it was more than 20 and I know there was a lot of beer being drank in her name and a big chant from the supporters in the corner during the game was "Hey Hope, Thanks For The Beer!".

Normally I would say this was just a team write-off with her name on it, but a friend ran into Hope yesterday and while they were talking she said something to the effect that she ended up paying for a lot of beer that night. She really did buy the beers herself out of her own pocket. Surely she is worthy of recognition by the FBM. I wasn't there, but I wish I could have been to tell the tale of when Hope Solo bought me a drink.
Video from the Laclede's Army Atheltica Supporters Group:

So this basically makes Hope Solo the female equivalent to Frankie Hejduk. That's a good thing, by the way....

A fantastic goalkeeper, a great human being, and, even if she didn't know, a member of the Free Beer Movement.

We love Hope Solo.

Found Free Beer Movement - Baltimore

Our friends at the Baltimore Brigade and USMNT supporter's group chapter of The American Outlaws released their local take on the FBM logo. Love the colors and a great addition of Mr. Boh the "spokesman" for the old Baltimore brew National Bohemian (Didn't think I knew what it might be, eh? Pretty smart... us FBMers!)

If you're in the Baltimore/DC area and are looking to join as USMNT supporter's group check these guys out.

And another thought... if anyone else out there has some solid designing chops we're always interested in your take on the FBM logo. Please include all of the following:

- Free Beer Movement
- "Imbibo Patefacio Iauna"
- Est. 2005
- A Beer
- Soccer Ball
- Web Address

Give it a shot. We've been kicking the idea around of a t-shirt sometime soon and we'd like to have multiple designs to offer interested parties!

Photo Essay: The Making of Aztex Amber Ale

Ever since the FBM decided to flee the country of Honduras because of their political problems and move to Austin, Texas we'd meticulously researched the local soccer scene.

We knew that where ever we moved when we returned to the US we were going to fully invest myself in the soccer opportunities that were available to us. Both Major League Soccer franchises, FC Dallas and the Houston Dynamo were both about three hours away so it fell to the United Soccer League One's Austin Aztex.

This past season was their first in USL-1 and despite the on-going political and logistical difficulties the league and its rivals are facing, the club is looking forward to a positive 2010 season.

The FBM immediately hooked up with the local supporter's group for the Aztex, Chantico's Army and dove head first into recruit friends as fans of American and Austin soccer. Long-time followers of the site know that we've hosted several "Free Beer Match Days" for Aztex games and continue to look for more chances to work with the local soccer scene.

This weekend provided the perfect opening to combine the two loves of the FBM: beer and soccer. Chantico's Army is looking to expand its influence in the city of Austin and decided that brewing a team-centric beer might crack the divide between us as soccer fans and the larger Austin social scene.

Thus the idea of Aztex Amber Ale was conceived (our name suggestion by-the-way). That idea was put into motion this weekend when one of the members of Chantico's Army, Ed, who also happens to be great homebrewer made a preliminary batch of the "Triple A," as its called.

This batch is supposed to be ready about mid-December just in time for some holiday cheer in the void that is non-American soccer winter. We'll have a full run down on its (fingers-crossed) deliciousness).
