Doing Good With a Brew - The SOB Cup with Pints for Prostates

This weekend our amateur soccer club friends, the Stegman's Old Boys, are hosting their first annual SOB Cup in Minneapolis, Minnesota. One reason we like these guys? They love their beer.

The SOBs have a hilariously serious "club site" where they have a profile series drinking beer with their players and, best of all, they're sponsored by a local homebrew company, Northern Brewer.

Most importantly this group of SOBs are having their first organized tournament this weekend with a number of other local Minneapolis sides. The event will feature FREE BEER and brewing demonstrations from Northern Brewer with the tourney champions drinking homebrew from the SOB Cup. Sounds like plenty of quality FBM-time if you're in the area.

Now for the "Doing Good With a Brew" part of the this feature. The SOBs depart from their name and are sponsoring the charity, Pints for Prostates.

If you've in the Twin Cities area then you should check out the inaugural SOB Cup with loads of opportunities for FREE BEER and also a charitable cause.

Oh, oh... and there are post-tourney drink specials at The Tin Cup as well. This thing is chalk full of opportunities for soccer newbies to be exposed to the beautiful game Free Beer Movement-style!

For more information check out the tournament schedule.

Practicing What We Preach: Abita's S.O.S. Pilsner

We at the Free Beer Movement are notoriously unreliable.  We just don't always update the site in a timely manner, or respond to e-mails quickly, or call our mothers when we should (sorry mom!).

But our values are uncompromising and we've got those in abundance.  We're all about building American soccer through the power of free beer. Especially when we can combine our love of beer with doing good in the world ("For once in your life," that angry mom of ours would say.)

A few weeks back we wrote about Abita Brewing Co.'s S.O.S. (Save Our Shore), a brew who's purchase would help fund the clean up of the Gulf Coast after the terrible BP oil spill this summer.

As the post's title says, we practice what we preach, and the Free Beer Movement made a contribution to the Gulf Coast cleanup when we picked up some Abita's handiwork and enjoyed it during some great American soccer with friends.

S.O.S. is a German Weizen Pilsner, but not your typical pilsner. Start off with the fact that this one weighs in a 7.0% ABV (alcohol by volume) it packs more of a punch to your liver than the rest of the beers in this style. A great golden "straw" color, again, gives the impression of a simple pilsner, but it's betrayed by hints of tropical fruits and heavier than normal hops. A tasty finish hangs in your mouth a bit longer than what you'd expect from other pilsners.  Abita went out of it's way to make a pilsner that would stand out from the rest of it's style; mission accomplished.

The well is plugged, but there's still a big job to be done. Please pick up some Abita S.O.S. and help the Gulf Coast today.

Doing Good With a Brew - Abita Brewing Company's S.O.S. Campaign

From Abita's Website:
Working with the Louisiana Seafood Promotion & Marketing Board (LSPMB), Abita Beer announced that it has established ‘SOS – A Charitable Fund’ that will assist with the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill.
The fund has pledged that 100% of all money raised will go to charity. In addition, the Louisiana Seafood Marketing Board will play an important role in advising where the money can do the most good. An advisory committee is being established as the donation process and grant procedures are finalized.
The centerpiece of the fundraising effort is a new charitable beer created by Abita. The brew, called SOS – A Charitable Pilsner, will generate 75¢ for every bottle sold. This Abita Beer is a message in a bottle...a distress signal for the troubled waters of our Gulf Coast. For every bottle sold Abita will donate 75¢ to the rescue and restoration of the environment, industry and individuals fighting to survive this disastrous oil spill. This unfiltered Weizen Pils is made with Pilsner and Wheat malts. It is hopped and dry hopped with Sterling and German Perle hops. It has a brilliant gold color, a sweet malt flavor, and a pleasant bitterness and aroma.
In addition, related retail merchandise (hat, tee shirt, lapel pin, decal and car magnet) will be sold and 100% of the net proceeds will also go to the SOS Fund.
For more information please visit Abita's SOS page.
